When I first heard that Joyce and James were engaged, I was so happy for them! When they asked me to photograph their wedding, I was elated! I’ve known Joyce and James for years. We met way, way back when I used to live and climb in Surrey. It meant so much to be considered to photograph their wedding because, knowing them, they were bound to do something adventurous like fly in a helicopter to the top of a mountain to tie the knot! There was just one condition… I had to join them in their tradition of taking a naked selfie at the summit of the mountain – DONE.
Our wedding adventure started with a safety briefing at Black Tusk Helicopter the day before the wedding. I joined James and Joyce’s family for dinner, then headed back to the hotel to make sure all my gear was prepped and ready to go. I don’t remember what time we woke up, but it was something ridiculous like… 3am or something. I hopped on over to Joyce’s room to get some [very early] morning prep shots. The emotions were already flying around as she was so excited to see her dad to give him a first look at her in her dress. After getting his little sneak peek and bawling his eyes out, I hopped in my car and headed to the airfield to meet up with James for our first flight up to the Tantalus mountain range.
The specific spot we flew to was on the Serratus Glacier. It was a spot James and Joyce had hiked up to before… and I think they did some ski touring up here as well! We got up to the glacier just as the sun was rising over the horizon. Squamish had been getting some pretty strong winds over the past few days which was bringing in the smoke from the forest fires in the interior. The smog had enveloped most of the Squamish Valley, but we were so high up that we were above it all. James and I quickly found a spot for the ceremony, then we took a moment to enjoy the view and just breathe in the fresh mountain air.
Joyce arrived on the next flight up. I set James up for his first look and took a few steps back so that he could have his peek at his bride uninterrupted. They were SO happy to see each other! James was absolutely stunned by Joyce’s beauty and was speechless!
The remaining guests had arrived in the next flight and were all set for this 5am wedding! We all joined in the circle to watch these two love birds get married. They shared their vows with each other surrounded by everything and everyone they loved – their closest friends and famly, the snow capped mountains, the lush green forests below, and the seemingly desolate alpine.
Joyce and James have been on many outdoor adventures together, but that day was definitely their greatest adventure of all. I am so blessed to call these two amazing people my friends and am so grateful to have been able to document their special day.
