You may remember Nate and Miranda from their Ice Cream and Airplane inspired engagement shoot. Well, a few months have passed and the time has finally come for them to tie the knot!
Family and friends are very important to Nate and Miranda (even more important than Ice Cream) so they they planned their wedding so that everyone could be included. Their wedding ceremony took place at Shaughnessy Heights United Church in Vancouver and the reception at Kirin Seafood Restaurant in New Westminster.
Our day together started off with Ryan and I photographing the priceless moments in the morning. While Miranda and her bridesmaids got ready, her friends and family set the house up for the door games and tea ceremony that would happen later. I dropped Ryan off at Nate’s place earlier that morning so when he arrived with the boys at Miranda’s parents’ home, everything was in place for him to receive his prized bride… but the girls were not going to make it that easy for him.
The door games began with a little ice cream challenge. The task was for the boys to decorate a picture of an ice cream cone with fuzzy pompoms using only their feet. Nothing like a little toe dexterity challenge to start your day off. The next challenge was paying a bit of homage to Nate’s love for airplanes – it was fun to see the different designs of paper planes that were “folded” up. The door games finished off with a lovely stroll around the neighbourhood. The girls were concerned that the boys might get wet so they prepared some bright ponchos for them to wear as well as some protective shoes.
Next on the agenda would be a traditional tea ceremony with Miranda’s side of the family followed by the western ceremony at Shaughnessy Heights United Church. When we arrived at the church, I felt a rush of positive vibes from both new and familiar faces. After getting a few quick detail shots, I headed over to the room where Miranda was changing into her wedding dress. She was almost done getting changed as I arrived to capture the finishing touches and she looked absolutely amazing. After a quick group prayer on both sides, it was time to get married! Love filled the bright and airy church and we had a wonderful ceremony. Following the ceremony was a light lunch reception at the church, then we were off to our bridal party session.
Nate and Miranda got married a week after I had adopted a new dog. Being the productive person I am, I decided to take the dog for a hike through Pacific Spirit Park while I did some location scouting at the same time. I picked this area because I know the tree canopy is quite thick over here and the weather can be a bit unpredictable during the fall season. The trees would provide enough cover for us incase it did rain, but it didn’t so I guess we got lucky! After Pacific Spirit Park, we headed toward campus and stopped at a boulevard on East Mall to capture the colours of the Fall foliage. We finished our session off outside of the new Pharmaceutical building on campus at UBC. I’ve always been a fan of the unique architecture of this building and it would also provide coverage for us in case the rain decided to creep up on us.
Our day together concluded with a dinner reception at Kirin Seafood Restaurant in New Westminster. We arrived ahead of schedule and started the night off with the tea ceremony for Nate’s side of the family. After that, the new couple were free to mingle with arriving guests before everyone was seated for the start of dinner. Speeches and games went on throughout the night to entertain the guests and we finished off our night with a cake cutting and champagne toast.
Nate and Miranda, it was wonderful to connect with the two of you again and thank you so much for choosing me to photograph such an important day in your lives. I wish you two the best in the years to come!
